School photos
A sports day produces six hundred photographs, and consent is not uniform across them. Some families said yes, some said no, and the newsletter goes out on Friday. Doing that by hand is an evening’s work; doing it in a browser tool means uploading children’s faces to somebody else’s server.
What School mode sets up
- Face hiding on, mosaic at 80% strength, area widened 35% (Pro)
- Small and distant faces included — the ones in the back row, not just the foreground
- Text hiding off, so name tags and banners you meant to keep stay readable
- Long edge 2000 px, JPEG at quality 90
- Sequential renaming from 001, so a handout set has stable numbers (Pro)
- GPS removed from every exported file (Pro)
- Hiding, renaming and size open first; captions and destination below
Nothing leaves the building
Every step runs on the PC in front of you. There is no account, no upload and no cloud queue — which is usually the difference between a policy a school can sign off and one it cannot.
Consent is still yours to decide
The app finds faces; it does not know which ones you have permission to publish. It hides what it finds, and you review before anything is written. For the frames where a specific child must stay visible, you turn hiding off for that run — the decision stays with the person who has the consent forms.
You see what will be hidden, before it is written
Detection is automatic; it is not infallible. Before a run exports anything, VARNAMORE lists every text area it found and lets you switch off the ones that should stay readable — a shop sign you meant to keep, a house number that is part of the listing. Anything it did not find is not hidden, so the preview is there to be looked at.
Your originals are not touched
Hiding, resizing and renaming happen on the copies that go out. The files off the camera stay exactly as they were — verified continuously by automated tests that compare SHA-256 hashes before and after a run. Nothing is uploaded; everything runs on your PC.
Then it checks its own work
When the run finishes, Delivery Check reads every exported file back from disk and measures it: dimensions, file size, format, file names, duplicates, whether GPS is actually gone. You get 1,000 / 1,000 PASSED, or the exact files that need attention. How Delivery Check works →
A mode is a set of settings, not a different app
Choosing School changes three things: the values above, which panels start open, and the order the panels sit in on the right. Nothing is removed — every other feature is still there, in the same place it always was. Your destination folder, language, theme and licence are left alone, and “General” puts the ordering back.
You can change any of it afterwards. The mode is a starting point for the work you do most, not a rule about what you are allowed to do.
What the free version does
Resizing, cropping, exposure, sharpening, monochrome, AI upscaling for five images a month, and Delivery Check are all free, with no time limit and no registration.
The items marked (Pro) above need a licence: hiding faces and text, file size caps, renaming, watermarks, burnt-in captions, multi-size export, metadata and GPS removal, straightening verticals, and CMYK conversion.
Every paid feature, hiding included, is unlocked for seven days from your first launch — long enough to run a real job through it before deciding. Pricing →
